About Julian Villafuerte
Julian is a Canadian transit planner based in Montréal.
During his Masters at McGill, he was introduced to the universe of open-source transportation planning software in R, including tools for modelling transit accessibility on real and planned networks.
Julian joined the Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) as a Transit Planner in 2023. He collaborated with other planners on the 2026 bus network redesign. The methods he developed for bus stop spacing optimization were foundational to improvements to lines 18 and 161, which now offer shorter and more reliable trips.
He identified a gap for accessible tools that compare the costs and benefits of transit network design scenarios. To address this, he developed and released Croquis, an open-source transit sketch planning and GTFS production software.
Julian is the co-founder of Activate Transit Windsor-Essex, a transit advocacy group in his hometown. In 2022, he led the development of a community mandate for transit based on the results of a survey he designed.
Julian is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
